F Posterity, issue 52: "F Posterity"

The final installment of F Posterity is the title track. This song is a poetic explanation of the concept, attempting to clarify what exactly "f posterity" means. I somehow doubt it does that, but it's helped me feel closure on the project. If I feel anything after this undertaking, it's that you've got to do what you do or you're not really doing it. Thanks for listening while I do.

f Posterity

visions fraught with forecasts cast latter days in purple hazes,
saying aught but that the end is near, but what they meant:
eternity is already here, hearing weighted judgments on cosmic scales,
scaling science in if-thens beyond ulterior propositions, in-theories,
since relativity passed no buck to the subjective tuckpointing of
cracks inharmonious.

timelines caught in mythologic fantasy beget not eventides tied to morning stars,
starting only thus: to finish just, and rust in static immortality.

F Posterity, issue 51: Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy"

For the last cover of the F Posterity project, I wanted to explore what is easily the best pop song of the new millennium. Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" better communicates a complex emotion in a way the mass audience can hear than any other hit since 2000. Maybe longer. The production is perfect, the performance is soulful, the lyrics are real, and the song is a classic 3-minute banger.

Hearing the last verse makes me think of Apple's "here's to the crazy ones" ad. Cee Lo sings "my heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb / and all I remember is thinking, 'I wanna be like them'", and that commercial addresses the same sentiment on another level.

Last weekend in Seattle I heard Ray Lamontagne doing a pretty cover of it on KEXP. I imagined it more as a track-laying song, the kind of rhythmic chant hard laborers used to keep time on the railroad. With sledges and pickaxes breaking rocks between the words. The lyric is too sporadic to lend itself well to that though, and I ran into the same problem trying to adapt it to a country-picked blues too. Finally, I found it worked best with something Dave Van Ronk taught me, the variable time signature. I'm not sure what the exact term is for it, but basically, the song drives the meter without a consistent number of beats per measure. He used this approach on his re-adapatation of the House of the Rising Sun, and I love the way this approach takes it out of a predictable place. You're expecting it to conform to 4/4, and it demands you wait until the lyric drives the change.

F Posterity, issue 50: "Persistence of Regret"

Since I'm on the collabo-tip with the last track, I'm throwing up a song that's been about a year in the writing and is really an Analog Jetpack song. At band practice in early June last year, we put together three entirely new songs, which included We The Freaks, Tenuous Confessions, and this one. Robby had written the music a while before that, and had it waiting around to do something with, so he taught it to us that night.

I like recording things on cassette tape, as it give you that warm analog sound, and we recorded the rehearsal for future reference on the new songs. The tape deck is the same one I recorded my third album with, and you can see a Photoshopped version of it at analogjetpack.com. I don't think I've changed the batteries in about two years.

So one thing that sounds really bad is when you have an old source tape off of a crude demo and you try to record some pristine, hot-mic overdub on it. You just can't reconcile the two fidelities well, unless you're really going for an arty sound that's inaccessible to the mass public. Which, incidentally, is probably something I'd be more into. As I just finished the lyrics this week, I needed to match the sound of the instrumental we taped last June, so I recorded my vocal overdub into the same tape deck yesterday and synced them both up in ProTools. Finally, I laid the guitar solo in.

The base instrumental you hear is the first time we'd ever played the song through, and it's one of my favorite recordings. There's something super authentic about the first time you capture a song on tape that'll never quite be matched by a studio recording. It's something more real and alive then the fine-tuned pin-drop sound of a commercial record. Since I don't know when we'll get around to giving this song that treatment, I wanted to share it here.

F Posterity, issue 49: "Breakin' Plates"

I'm a day late, but that's 'cause I had to phone in a favor to my buddy Chadwell to lay some vocals over this song. Chadwell has a latent rockstar persona, and he's been searching out various ways to get his music on. In 2003, he just wanted to write a new song to sing, but was new to the process. So I gave him a scrawl-covered page of lyrics out of my journal and said, sing any of these in any order, and I'll play some chords for you.

So I played a basic I-IV-V chord variant that you hear in copious reams of rock songs, and Chadwell improvised a melody while reading whatever he could from the book. Notable is the line where he sings, "But it's not... something I can't read," because he actually couldn't read what I had written. It's a nice finished thought by itself though.

Chadwell hears this backed with a horn section, but since I don't know my brass from my elbow -- lol? -- I've just laid bass, guitars and drums. The motivational speakers I found by typing "motivational speaker" into archive.org. Seeking out trite clichés has never been easier.

Bonus points are in order, I think, for a two-minute song. The best kind.

F Posterity, issue 48: "Trio for Vocal, Metronome, Wurlitzer"

Over the weekend I picked up a Wurlitzer electric piano in New York City. I paid for it in December, but I hadn't been up to the big city to take it home until the Indie Roots tour brought us into town. I've been loving it as a beautiful distraction.

Wurlitzers are sort of a cross between a harmonica and a piano, in which hammers strike vibrating metal reeds. They've also got an adjustment for vibrato and a sustain pedal. They're simple to play but plenty complex to manage technically and tough to restore. Luckily, this one's in playable shape and I got a good deal on it from my friend Steve Espinola, who had two of them.

I've been playing with these chords all week, and they sound like something I've heard, but I can't put my finger on what. They're sort of a rotating cycle of sixths or something that make that melancholy sound. If it sounds familiar, point me to what you're hearing.

To make it all art-y and composition-y, I've put a real pretentious name it.

F Posterity 47: "She Hates It When I'm Right"

I'm a day late this week, as I'm on the Indie Roots tour, and it completely slipped my mind that it was Wednesday yesterday.

Since I'm on the road, I have to reach into the vault for an old song. This was written over a year ago, and it strikes me as kind of a pop radio thing that could work as a single for somebody. It's a sentimental song, but after listening to it, I think it's worth publishing for this project.

F Posterity, issue 46: Michael Jackson's "Beat It"

It's a cover week for the project, and I fancied myself some Michael Jackson this week. I hear this song as an old folk work song or something, and I've done it up as such.

Not much more to say except I'm late and it's late. Keeping busy trying to get taxes, work, the tour and everything pulled together.

F Posterity, issue 45: "Mass Ave Strut"

I've only composed a couple guitar rags in my life, and that's because they're hard to do well. Given, when ragtime swept the country with a fury at the turn of the last century, everything and anything was thrown into ragtime without regard for taste, form or flavor. There was money to be made! Ragtime, motherf*cker!!! That's the name of my next screenplay, "Ragtime Motherf*cker".

A perfect rag is four parts in 64 bars, of which each part typically repeats and may have an interlude or two between. Joplin is, of course, the master of the form, establishing the genre historically with "The Entertainer" and the "Maple Leaf Rag". People began to do scholarly interpretations of these on the guitar in the middle of last century, and one of the first was Dave Van Ronk. He was early enough in the folk/blues interpretive movement to be criticized for singing like a black man. Skeet-skat and all that.

He interpreted the classic "St. Louis Tickle" and plenty others, and wrote a few beauties as well. Somewhere he said people should begin writing rags straight for the guitar instead of laboring to interpret piano rags for six strings, and I took that to heart however many years ago I wrote this, probably in '99 or 2000.

This is a wandery and repetitive piece, and I must've finished it while living in Boston, because somehow it's been stuck with the name "Mass Ave Strut". Which I think is appropriate. I imagine the movements describing the hipsters, the homeless, the Berklee students and Christian Scientists (perhaps even respectively) and all the other hodge-podge of Boston living crammed into the Back Bay.

Oh, and obviously there're no lyrics. It's a guitar rag.

F Posterity, issue 44: "Let's Fall Asleep Like This"

Beleaguered by creative failure today, I'm posting a song I recorded months ago but wasn't quite satisfied. After fighting a new song all morning, I'm pretty satisfied with this old one. I'm sure you'll think me a sentimental old fluff, one that plays the only three consecutive chords he can string together on an accordion, but here's one of those breathy, bassy-string touchy-feely numbers.
