The FFS Microwavable Podcast 5.0

I have an opinions segment this week on The Frozen Food Section's Microwavable Podcast. I argue that my buddy Calc2's art represents the attenuation of American society. It's all tongue-in-cheek. I don't actually believe his artwork is morally reprehensible, but it's always fun to play moral superior. It gives you the vicarious thrill of the fundamentalist perspective, that lack of perspective that claims God as its authority.

Also, for my Washington peeps, there's an interview of Stephanie Stone, owner of Capital City Records, which is closing this month.

And Analog Jetpack has a featured live song.

F Posterity, issue 10: "Cold Day At The Races"

Here's a more recent song I wrote last October. I haven't hit the harmonica in awhile, particularly not in conjunction with playing guitar. But having gotten a good dose of Dylan and Springsteen for my birthday from my brother, I'm feeling it once again.

Nothing to say here about this.

Cold Day at the Races

Put away your pillowcases, be they ghosts or be they racists
Masquerading dislocations insisting on a scream
Don the skirts of lamentations on the firsts of the bland and brazen
Such peculiar amazements writing eulogies for dreams
But its a cold day at the races
Collars up on tepid faces
Gambling guts hard up for graces
When the pay stubs say theres just no finish line

On the piles of dissertation stoke the fires of retail impatience
Like quacks romancing inpatients in a panic to get to nowhere
Break the legs on the third ovation, drive the stakes against the deflation
Great shakes and damnation, like braces on the ankles of a showmare
But its a cold day at the races
Collars up on tepid faces
Gambling guts hard up for graces
And all the pay stubs say theres just no finish line

My iPod Port Swapping movement will save the world.

Ever since I first graced the Washington Metro with my old-school 10 GB iPod, I've had the idea to bring nations and peoples together with the power of a sound jack.

Follow me, because it doesn't make any sense yet, what I just said.

Sharing what you're listening to can be a messy sport, particularly if you drive your earbuds deep. I'm not down with passing those around to the multifunkious ears on any given subway. Yet the need persists to tear down walls, to cross cultural boundaries, and to really listen to each other. Or at least to each others' iPods.

So I devised a savior for the world, and it's called Port Swapping.

It goes like this: when you've got your iPod on, and you sit near someone with an iPod too, you pull out your headphone plugs and plug in to each others' headphone jacks. You get your listen on to whatever the other person is jiving, and then you switch back.

The process has a vaguely carnal appeal to it, though everybody involved has male connectors, and only the iPod is being violated. But it's safe! Harmless. You never let go of your iPod, no fluids are shared, and no one can accuse you of using your 3.5mm member for iniquity. On the contrary: you're sharing a moment of humanity.

In New York or San Fran, you can peep at least five iPods on any subway car. (And DC, to a lesser degree, because the old guard can't yet figure out why an iPod is better than a Walkman.) But this brings up a good point: why discriminate? I've hooked up with a Discman or two in my day, to say nothing of mini-cassette recorders and AM transmitters. Shoot, I've had the odd one-night stand with a Panasonic now and then. I didn't respect myself in the morning, but I learned something about myself. And that's this: don't have sex with Panasonic home electronics.

I put my Port Swapping plan for humanity to the test this weekend, whilst riding a bus northward to the Big City. I sought out someone with whom I could tear down cultural boundaries and really grow by reaching out to them. Someone outside of my comfort zone. Across the aisle sat a cute white girl with brown hair... listening to a Discman. Perfect. We were worlds apart. By gum, we'd challenge those stereotypes.

So I reached out, and with stumbling sign language, invited her to plug into my world, which at that point, was playing the Gaskets. She was a little flustered until she realized what I was getting at: Excuse me miss? We need to change the world together by swapping ports. And as soon as she understood what I meant, her flusteredness turned to embarrassment.

I plugged in to her world, and my ears were filled with a monotone male voice. She was listening to a book on tape.

It probably would've been less awkward had I not thought she was German. I was giving my best wide-eyed, too-loud tone, the one we take with people who are new to English. Turned out she was from Rockville, Maryland. Not a even little bit foreign.

The point, however, is that we changed the world a little bit in that moment. And I invite you to do the same. Port Swap with someone. Start with the man in the mirror, ask him to change his ways, and then ask some cute girl/guy on your metro transit system to swap ports with you, if even for just a few seconds.

You won't regret it.

Unless they're listening to a book on tape.

UPDATE: Read the comment thread here, in which the non-foreigner discovers herself in my blog and apologizes for listening to a book on tape.

F Posterity, issue 9: "Calaveras"

Here's another old song, started in December 2002 and finished about a year later. I don't have much to say about it. I don't think I've ever played it out.

Calaveras are those happy, vibrant skeletons sporting active lifestyles in Mexican art. I think they're beautiful, celebrating a sort of joie de muerte. I'll be playing at Chief Ike's in Adams Morgan this Monday, where there's a whole wall of partying calaveras. They seem so happy for being emaciated corpses. Perhaps there's a after-school message in all this.

INT. WARM GRAY SEAMLESS - DAY

A HAS-BEEN QUASI CELEB gazes earnestly into the camera at the after-school audience.
HAS-BEEN QUASI CELEB

Discriminating against emaciated corpses isn't okay. They're people like the rest of us, except without skin, blood, muscle tissue or essential organs. Despite that, skeletons live happier, more active lifestyles than most flesh-bearing people do.

Sweet, now I've got a new property to pitch to NBC. Until they pick it up, I've put links to all previous issues of F Posterity so you can frolick amidst the binary waveforms. Go, go now. Do it.

Calaveras

No sun set on the sky tonight
Out where the fugitives lose the skyline
Where it's no wonder when no one wonders when no one's right

There's an old smell rising from the ground
There's a death knell ringing at the edge of town
There is a death knell ringing at the edge of town
But if we leave
If we leave
There's a cold breeze callin' out my name
There's a clam digger out makin' madman's claims
And all the handpainted signs are new but misspelled the same
But if we leave
If we leave
There's a bull's eye on the mission roof
And I feel so damned odd lonesome, like a missing tooth
And who's to say who's to say who knows the truth
But if we leave
If we leave
If we leave
Hey Molly, make a name for us

Punish, punish, punish, punish the rental...

Hott hott track from our Velvet Lounge gig last month...

Punish the Rental

When it comes to a bulletproof phylum
And every last cuckoo clockin' the asylum
Gets elected with defective gigantic
Cynical, political umbilic titanic

When the hawks talk like they were heaven-sent
And witch-hunt when you question the government
When they suffer it to be so plain
That you're powerless, powerless to make a change and
When it comes to the end of the dream
With a few of my favorite destruction scenes
You punish, punish, punish, punish the rental
Punish, punish, punish, punish the rental

Death and brass tacks are the only facts sure to be
Rapture misinterpretations, homeland security
Take a moment to act like you own it
Drop it into third and don't defer to carom it

When the plan's lock, stock and bureaucracy
Scratch tickets and a powerball-tocracy
Throw 'em up, throw 'em up your hands in the air
With a little bit of cinematic savoir-faire and
When it comes to the end of the dream
With a few of my favorite destruction scenes
You punish, punish, punish, punish the rental
Punish, punish, punish, punish the rental

F Posterity, issue 8: "Narcissist Blues"

Piano was the first instrument I learned. My parents insisted my brothers and I take two years of lessons, and after that if we wanted to quit, we could. After two years, we all promptly quit, having paid our debt to society.

It wasn't until college when I was learning guitar that I got really interested in the piano again. With my recollection of rudimentary classical notation, I began to take undertake excruciating turns at reading ragtime scrolls like Joplin's "Solace" and the Maple Leaf Rag. Those, in turn, are candy when you look at Jelly Roll's crazy two-handed masterpieces.

The piano is really a thing of beauty. 88 strings hit by 88 felt-covered hammers, attached to a a keyboard of 88 keys and pedals that dampen or sustain their ring. It's like owning a car, only you can entertain guests in the parlor.

Last fall, in the midst of quitting my job and making a short film for a conference, I took the odd stroll on Craigslist and found an old upright piano for $350 bucks. I went to inspect it, and it was in great condition. It had been maintained by a piano teacher who was moving to San Fran and couldn't afford to take it with her. After looking it over and hearing it was originally from Nebraska, as I am, I had to have it. The fact that it's a 1916 model, and thus has been around through 9 decades of popular music, made it that much sweeter. The thing saw the tail end of the invention of jazz, its revival in the '40s, and all else throughout the 20th century. And still sounds good.

Anyway, it was another $300 to move it to my place, and worth every penny.

Now, I only need to learn to play it well. This is the first song I've composed on the piano, and you can hear I don't have the most deft hand. But them's complicated, playing those keys and singing at the same time.

Narcissist Blues

Well the first pink pearls of dawn come on and I'm staring at the same old scene
The last thing that I could see before the lights went out
And when my eyes are closed, I still see it all the nights around

Well the awful truth and the burden of proof weighs heavy on a hungry heart
'Cause ain't nobody seem to believe when I cop my plea
That as a matter of fact, she is still in love with me
But all things equal I think
I would just as soon take to drinkin' than
To watch you prostitute yourself with him
Well the last brass rays of sun go down and I'm standing on a sad side street
Making overtures of love to a young, cheap date
Pouring out my heart like an old peach crate

It's times like these I say, 'brother please, you got more class than this'
But there's only really ever one love of the narcissist
And the sight of her smarts 'cause you just can't forget that kiss
But all things equal I think
I would just as soon take to drinkin' than
To watch you prostitute yourself with him
And all things equal I think
I'd just as soon consign myself to drink
Than to watch you prostitute yourself with him

F Posterity, issue 7: "Advice To A Young Jedi"

Monday morning I woke up with the phrase "complicit by complacence" in my head. I don't really know where it came from, but it sounded like a good Rage Against the Machine kind of chorus. Googling it found nothing, though the related phrase "complacency is complicity" has 31 hits, which, in the galaxy of Google, is still nothing.

It didn't take much time to find a home for it. I was toying with the thought of writing some good angry guitar lixx to drive it home, when I realized I already had a song.

I've been writing this song for three years. If I look in my sketchbooks, I wrote the first lyrics in April 2003, and disliked all of them. All the lines on the page are crossed out. Then there's another page like this in another sketchbook from a year or two later. Looking at it, it's obvious why the song still refused to live.

Compositions like this perplex. You take a few serious shots at writing it and still have some kinda junk you'd never want to sing, much less listen back to. That's frustrating. It then sits on a schedule of "unfinished" material, the stuff you play a little of, then curl up in the fetal position to watch daytime television. Even if it's prime time.

After I woke up with this thought in my head, I wrote the rest of the song in the last two days, finishing this morning. I've probably sung it through five times now.

I haven't written a rant like this in awhile. This is protest antifolk.

Advice to a Young Jedi
(complicit x complacence)

The sleep in your eyes is the tired reprise of the siren song
The only mandate of the self-help tape is to sing along
Just notice, the tongue of the lotus wags to the ones in the high, high hopes of
Selling the swell of a pendulum swing into being
Complicit by complacence
There ain't nothing you can do to change them
But death is hesitation and confidence is patience
What a tragedy - the message had to be surround sound
Last night the case of commemorative plates came crashing down
With all the wisdom and all the whimsy mixed up with a quarter cup of Disney
One has to wonder when the liar says he is, isn't he?
Complicit by complacence
There ain't nothing you can do to change them
But death is hesitation and confidence is patience
So fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight until you breach the peace
And ride, ride, ride, ride, ride, ride right until you reach the seas
Love 'em all ways, love 'em every, no fear, no meanness, no envy
This is last call from the long haul of the all but extinct
Complicit by complacence
There ain't nothing you can do to change them
But death is hesitation and confidence is patience
Complacence is complicity
Rigor mortis domesticity
Earned inertia and static electricity

ps - props to anyone who can place the advice I cribbed in the last verse.
