F Posterity, issue 37: "White Collar (Old Philly Dollar)"

Every once in awhile I have a dream in which music is playing, or I'm singing a song in the dream, and I wake up with the lyrics in my head. Over Christmas while I was in Paris, I woke up with the phrase, "I can pass an old Philly dollar into the lap of the authorities" and a melody in my head. I wrote it down, because if you don't, those things rarely return.

I didn't know quite what it meant, the old Philly dollar, but it sounded vaguely like slang for counterfeit. Moreover, the lyrics I'd written down that morning say, "And if I can pass a Pennsylvania greenback into the very hands of the Fed" ... with no conclusion. I can't remember if I woke with that as part of the dream or not, but I wondered all day what an old Philly dollar and a Pennsylvania greenback were.

Today I went to write a new song with the chorus, "I won't break for the county line when the verdict comes to serve my time / I'll just sing an old gospel rhyme and say goodbye," and the Pennsylvania greenback jumped back in my head. It's nice to have aimless lyrics sitting around, because they usually find a place eventually. This song fits a kind of melancholy, old-timey niche, like Bob Dylan's "Lay Down Your Weary Tune", "Farewell" or Tom Waits' "Old Shoes". This song also gave me the excuse to rip a line from "His Eye Is On The Sparrow", one of my favorite gospel tunes.

Regardless, "old Philly dollar" still means nothing. An "old Enron dollar" might be closer to meaningful, but less romantic.
White Collar (old Philly dollar)

chorus:
I won't break for the county line when the verdict comes to serve my time
I'll just sing an old gospel rhyme and say goodbye.

You know I can pass an old Philly dollar into the lap of the authorities
Swap that stash for cold, hard cash and walk away scott free
And if I can pass a Pennsylvania greenback into the very hands of the fed
This sort is just for sport, and I'll soon be dead
chorus
I like to see my work in the headlines, I like to see a rush of police
Stand too close just to boast, and walk away scott free
And I like to think that I'm just a locksmith with a knack for the perfect key
High hopes or stethascope, it's just the same to me
chorus
Well I never set foot in a prison, nor correctional facility
My success rate has killed my faith in all the powers that be
And something inside me is desperate to be caught with a crimson hand
Just so I can know I'm not supposed to win in the end
chorus
I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free
But something inside me knows I'm not supposed to be
chorus

F Posterity, issue 36: Beck's "Bottle of Blues"

It's a cover week for the F Posterity project, and I've recorded one of my favorite songs arranged for a fingerpicked country blues.

I think Beck's Mutations is his masterwork. Unlike many of his albums, which are largely unfinished before they begin producing, Mutations was a batch of finished songs that he brought to Nigel Godrich and recorded in two weeks. There's about as much honesty as you can get from Beck in the songs on that album (short of the weepy breakup tunes on Sea Change, which are, nevertheless, brilliant), and I think it's because he wrote them beforehand. When you're writing on the spot for unfinished songs in the studio, the deadline is the demand, and your pen pushes completion over expression. But he brought these songs as he imagined them, finished and ready to record.

From the first words, "Cold brains / unmoved / untouched / unglued / alone at last" to the last, in which he sings, "Looking back at some dead world that looks so new", Mutations plays to me like an homage to all the madness of the 20th century that filled Beck's head and made him who he is. And I think no album he's made is as complete.

In the spirit of the deep dark blues that spans the album, this is Beck's "Bottle of Blues".

Exclusive soft launch: indieroots.org!!

MySpacers et al:

Today I offer a salve to all the slandercasts, sloganeering and slacktivism of the last 7 years. Some DC friends and I have formed a non-profit with a specific mission: to realize voting rights for the District of Columbia.

It's my feeling that effectively no one in America knows that DC citizens have no Senator nor Congressman. Congress has "exclusive" power over the city of DC, but we don't have a vote in Congress, even as we pay taxes and serve in the military. It's been like that since 1801.

Our remedy for these ails is to take a tour of DC bands coast to coast to let America know.

Please read all about it at

www.indieroots.org

The site is still in development, but we're starting to spread it underground to get the word out. And then we'll release a firestorm of sexxy press releases on the mass media. And then we'll be on Good Morning, America.

We feel like this issue is a no-brainer. Who can say 580,000 citizens don't deserve voting representation in Congress? That's why it's a cure for the slacktivist flash-animation blog assassinations of the political '00s, because this is something we can all believe in, without an ill word toward any party involved. Dig more on the site, and here on MySpace, you can add us at myspace.com/indierootsdc!

F Posterity, issue 35: "Ask Somebody"

Here's another old song from around 2003 that needed some editing. As Regina Spektor sings, berating the songwriter in her,
You don't have no doctor Robert
You don't have no uncle Albert
You don't even have good credit
You can write but you can't edit
This is one I played with the band I rolled with in DC before Analog Jetpack. The song was a little long and smug but fun to play. It needed some editing, and I hadn't bothered until I had nothing to record today. And once I got recording, it couldn't be just acoustic. I'd have liked to throw some harmonies and whatnot over it all, some shouts and what have you, but the day's prospects for productivity are looking bleak as is. I did manage to get some roommates on the soul claps. And who needs more than some soul claps in your life?
Ask Somebody

If I could tell you, brother man you know that I would
Hi-fives, holla, it's all good
But it would fail you, mackin' on a cell phone
Mock-important, slop top 40 ringtone
Spank elastic stonewashed jeans
Crankin' radio with extra MSG
But there's a big-legged woman at the back of the draw
Fixin' up a quarter million tons of slaw and singin'
I'm fightin' with a typewriter ribbon
Bleedin' cut-rate ink on the sun
While everybody in the business bleeds these tales by the tons
To grow tired like the old ones
Congratulations! I heard the haps
Pimpin' ground effects on a fanny pack
Pacin' out the lotto to finally pay
Rocking white British Knights after labor day
Bumping that Alpine at the intersection
Sideways glance just to see who's checkin' you out
And all the heads shake eyes rolled backs turned
Voices low, tradin' third-degree burns and
I am fightin' with a typewriter ribbon
Bleedin' cut-rate ink on the sun
And this has just gone on too long
And here comes the gong

If you don't know, then you just had better ask somebody
'Cause there are lo, so many more long gone, long before you now
And if you don't know, then you had better ask somebody
Statistics show and the studies and the nine out of ten
Shake their heads about the other one
Hellified triumph hydrochloride
Stereotypes in a checkout line
Shake your head and you're just the same
And just maybe, baby, the cryin' shame is
If it ain't somebody who just don't know
It's probably some trendsetter who ought to know better
But depending on where you have found to stand
The sky is already touching the ground and
chorus...

Smart Kitty has summoned me for mass media exposure

The good blogger Smart Kitty has asked me to answer five important questions for publication on her blog, which is considered "The preeminent record of achievement since 1889 ... and now a powerful online database ... with over 1.3 million biographies ... the most trusted biographical research tool."1

Despite the liberal helping of ellipses, I'm excited. Sounds pretty big to me. You can follow this influential soubrette here:

1Well apparently this is not a review of her blog, but marketing copy for "Who's Who" -- but it's close enough.

F Posterity, issue 34: "All-Time High Score"

This week's song stretches back to October 2004, was apparently updated in April 2005, and I just wrote a new chorus today. Strange the way these things hang around.

"All-Time High Score" might not an apropos title for this number, but it just landed there after the improvised finish. The song is actually more of a missive to all the broke-ass artists who struggle aimlessly to live a creative life. I think it's easier to do anywhere but the US.

RSG 999,950
All-Time High Score

Tortured souls make good artists
Poverty begets catharsis
Sugar and spice ain't got nothing on vice
When it comes down to painting the town
Pursue the blues and adore being poor
Ask them for less and they'll give you more of it
Chase down your fate and embrace being poor
For all of the pain it affords
Just a taste of the breaks can't hurt you
But ain't there some folly in calling it virtue
Blessed are those who are hungry and poor
When they don't know what they're starving for
chorus
Why, Virginia, why?
Can't a brother get a piece of the pie
Everybody here knows you're the story of the year
Selling sound advice at the low-low price
And it's damn the man and buck the system
Selling repression and marketing symptoms
All we are saying is give peace a payment
And some day we shall overcome
chorus
For all of the pain in this unlikely game
To initial that all-time high score

F Posterity, issue 33: "Bury Me In My Jetpack"

I'm crazy busy with the turn of the New Year, trying to make much happen in just a little bit of time. I've been meaning to get a good acoustic demo of this song done, as we'll be recording it electric with the band soon. And I'd have liked to get a little more on it in terms of production, but all I could manage today was a half-assed percussion track. Ah well. We'll be putting plenty of time into it for the album, which is really where it'll fly.

This song bears a notable debt to Dave Van Ronk's arrangement of "Death Letter Blues", which I find to be an exquisite vision of a traditional song. Van Ronk had such a beautiful way with rhythm and tone with his guitar, to say nothing of how he used his voice. Just the first notes on his arrangement of Leadbelly's song fire me up.

I've called this an ode to technology, but it winks just as much at the traditionalists as it does the futurists. So really it's for those who are both.
Bury Me In My Jetpack

They left a little light on in purgatory for me
But they saved the whole seventh circle for you
And I know the gates of hell are just mythology a-calling
But you say it's all the gosh honest truth
So when I die, you may bury me in my jetpack
With nary hint of setback because i'm gone
And you can lay me deep and pile that earth on easy
And I will trade the dirt for breezes
When I turn that sucker on
You never miss the water until your well, well, well hits a dry spell
And you'll pray on the day that the levee breaks
And ain't it just a sad, sad song to think catastrophe just has to be
But you say it only takes a grain of faith
chorus
So when the heights rain fire and the hailstorms set on
I'll fire my pack and meet the horsemen head on
Cuz I am a child of the sky and the heavens
And I won't be caught underground for armageddon
