F Posterity, issue 49: "Breakin' Plates"

I'm a day late, but that's 'cause I had to phone in a favor to my buddy Chadwell to lay some vocals over this song. Chadwell has a latent rockstar persona, and he's been searching out various ways to get his music on. In 2003, he just wanted to write a new song to sing, but was new to the process. So I gave him a scrawl-covered page of lyrics out of my journal and said, sing any of these in any order, and I'll play some chords for you.

So I played a basic I-IV-V chord variant that you hear in copious reams of rock songs, and Chadwell improvised a melody while reading whatever he could from the book. Notable is the line where he sings, "But it's not... something I can't read," because he actually couldn't read what I had written. It's a nice finished thought by itself though.

Chadwell hears this backed with a horn section, but since I don't know my brass from my elbow -- lol? -- I've just laid bass, guitars and drums. The motivational speakers I found by typing "motivational speaker" into archive.org. Seeking out trite clichés has never been easier.

Bonus points are in order, I think, for a two-minute song. The best kind.
Breakin' Plates

Nobody built the wall
Nobody shut the gates
Threw myself a party
No illusions, no apologies, breakin' plates

Contempt and contemplation
I'm looking for a seam
It's feeling like I'm dreaming all of these things
But it's not something I can't read
It's hard to say
To say what it will take
But something's got to break to make it happen
Desperation's boring me
I think I'll pack it in
Take myself and make myself
Into something I don't even recognize
It's hard to say
To say what it will take
But something's got to break to make it happen
Nobody built the wall
Nobody shut the gates
Nobody danced the waltz
So I threw myself a party and now I'm breaking plates

F Posterity, issue 48: "Trio for Vocal, Metronome, Wurlitzer"

Over the weekend I picked up a Wurlitzer electric piano in New York City. I paid for it in December, but I hadn't been up to the big city to take it home until the Indie Roots tour brought us into town. I've been loving it as a beautiful distraction.

Wurlitzers are sort of a cross between a harmonica and a piano, in which hammers strike vibrating metal reeds. They've also got an adjustment for vibrato and a sustain pedal. They're simple to play but plenty complex to manage technically and tough to restore. Luckily, this one's in playable shape and I got a good deal on it from my friend Steve Espinola, who had two of them.

I've been playing with these chords all week, and they sound like something I've heard, but I can't put my finger on what. They're sort of a rotating cycle of sixths or something that make that melancholy sound. If it sounds familiar, point me to what you're hearing.

To make it all art-y and composition-y, I've put a real pretentious name it.

New 4N4L06 J37P4CK!!

For all the peoples in the know,

The latest mixes off the forthcoming 4N4L06 J37P4CK album "And How They Flew" are available at www.myspace.com/analogjetpack. These new songs include "We teh Fr33ks", "Tenuous Confessions", and the rocked out electric take of "Bury My In My Jetpack".

We've returned from the Indie Roots tour with good press and good momentum for a homecoming at the Velvet Lounge in DC this weekend, playing with Hello Tokyo again, Red Racer and Red Collar. No word on the odd confluence of the latter two, but it should be a hot rocking good time.

Indie Roots tour coverage (UPDATE)

The Washington Post and the Associated Press covered the Indie Roots tour over the weekend. This makes the tour a success -- many more people will read these than we could reach playing city to city.

The Washington Post ran a photo of me and a photo of The Dance Party in the print edition, and video of Analog Jetpack on the online edition. That's Mick of The Dance Party singing backup vocals with me.

Story / Video

The Associated Press covered our meeting with celebrity via Colbert Report, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. Story

And today I'll be singing on the National Mall, at the reflecting pool in front of the Capitol. I'll go on around 4:30 pm:

www.votingrightsmarch.org

UPDATE: The crazy wind and rain didn't stop the march, but it did restrict the activities at the Capitol reflecting pool. The scheduled 2-hour program was reduced to a few speakers, including Mayor Fenty, and then there was a mixer or something with Joe Lieberman in the Dirksen Senate Office Building afterwards. So I didn't get to sing, but I braved the wind and rain to get down and see the crowds of a thousand or so. Good times.

F Posterity 47: "She Hates It When I'm Right"

I'm a day late this week, as I'm on the Indie Roots tour, and it completely slipped my mind that it was Wednesday yesterday.

Since I'm on the road, I have to reach into the vault for an old song. This was written over a year ago, and it strikes me as kind of a pop radio thing that could work as a single for somebody. It's a sentimental song, but after listening to it, I think it's worth publishing for this project.

F Posterity, issue 46: Michael Jackson's "Beat It"

It's a cover week for the project, and I fancied myself some Michael Jackson this week. I hear this song as an old folk work song or something, and I've done it up as such.

Not much more to say except I'm late and it's late. Keeping busy trying to get taxes, work, the tour and everything pulled together.

The DC Voting Rights Tour 2007 leaves in one week!

Brothers and sisters!

One week from today, The DC Voting Rights Tour 2007 smashes the proverbial bottle of champagne over its metaphorical hull as we set off for Philadelphia! We've been inundating the press and buzzing the social networking sites, and we want you to help us get the word out. We've got one week left to generate a turnout -- not just for amazing indie music, but to baptize the unwashed heathen with the gospel of DC voting rights!!

Aside from being District citizens, we love this issue because it is inherently non-political. Everyone can support voting rights for the DC citizens, because it's the American way. It's why we revolted against Great Britain: to have a say in the government that taxes us, makes laws and wages war. And we're 580,000 people like you that don't have that vote. The blinding irony, of course, is that we are the seat of power of history's greatest democracy.

Do you have any friends or family in the cities listed below? Old college pals? Fickle internet acquaintances? You can let them know by forwarding this email, blogging about the tour, posting it on message boards, IM'ing, texting, calling, and sending a postcard. We recommend all of these in rapid succession. If you want to use our tour posters, you can download all three of them or link to them here:

http://www.indieroots.org/thenationaltour/indierootshearye.gif
http://www.indieroots.org/thenationaltour/indierootsepluribus.gif

Finally, and most importantly for our friends in the DC metro area, the DC voting rights tour culminates in DCVote.org 's Voting Rights March on the Capitol (www.votingrightsmarch.org ) April 16th, at which I'll be singing a new song called "Three Red Stars", an anthem for the District in support of the two-century old issue of voting rights. I'll be joined by some of the members of the bands on the tour below, and we hope you'll come out to take place in this historic celebration.

However you can help us get the word out, we'd love you for it! On behalf of Indie Roots, myself, Max, Dan, Gist, The Dance Party, Analog Jetpack and Telemetrik, thanks for your help in making this historic change. Check out our lineups below and read more about everything at www.indieroots.org.
