F Posterity, issue 19: "Troubling"

F Posterity is back in black, yes friends, I'm let loose from the noose that's kept me hangin' around. I had a few ideas of what I'd publish today, and I recorded some, but looking over a track I had recorded previously, I'm feeling the feel of that one much more today. At the time, I didn't know how it struck me, and you kinda have to let it sit and percolate, as Robert Johnson once said of his pregnant wife.

These demos, ragged though they may be, are developing more with production, as I throw the sloppy-licious drum track over and maybe a few other instruments or harmonies. And with a future solo album I'm anticipating, I have a number of jazz-ish songs that I haven't really known what to make of, much like "Corned Beef Hash" on the last.

The song today is one of those, a smoky ballad-y thing entitled "Troubling". I think in writing this, I was stretching somewhat towards the old-time kind of songwriting of Gershwin, that straightforward kind of tell a story, say something songwriting. I'm still unsettled on the lyrics, and I imagine these will change before I record an album version of it.

This music I've had around for a few years, when I had it in mind to fill out a song about a girlfriend. Somehow I never could fit lyrics to it for that purpose, probably because she was waiting for it. There's a sure way to cramp an artist's style - get frustrated when he doesn't write something about you.

Troubling

A sudden change in the wind
Cloud cover low and blustry
One shutter unhinged
It's troubling

A high-top in the road
The odd post marked 'Return to Sender'
No dialtone
It's troubling
The subtle double-take
It's nothing, nevermind but I
These are not small things
Beyond your control

Some prophetic dream
A black thought
Passed across the face of a friend
And this persistent wondering
The steady waste of time
I've spent in love and I'm
Done wondering why
You're still not here tonight

It's troubling
The subtle double-take
It's nothing, nevermind but I
These are not small things
Beyond your control

A sudden change in the wind
Cloud cover low
And the thought
Just the thought, just the thought
The steady waste of time
I've spent in love and I'm
Done with wondering why
You're still not here tonight

It's

It's

She's haunting
She's haunting me
She's haunting
She's haunting me
She's haunting

Analog Jetpack strikes silver

Analog Jetpack has made it to the second round of the Bodog Battle of the Bands contest.

Gentle readers, as we've indicated in times past, time, and a half, the notion of creative contest rests poorly with us. We've indulged such obsequious pursuits at the odd moment of why not, and have found them both ill-fitting in the hips and of a strange allergenic textile.

But this one promised democracy and the like, and we engaged with fresh faces and rose-colored goggles.

There were some complications in the process, including being stood up for meetings, being bumped to last at a night of 11 sets, and having ne'er a moment to rehearse since our last gig in July. For five hours Sunday night, we swam amidst a sea of Gwar spikes and death metal, platform boots and hate rock, Durst screams and dark bass - and found it not entirely unlikable.

And rambling towards a simple set late on a black sabbath, we sought little more than to rain fire in seven 3-minute pop samplings and call it a night. And though it was late and the crowd had thinned like city lawns, we had a good time with some rough-edged performances. It was fun to play.

Thanks to the fans who stayed, and the judges who found us not entirely unlikable. We're looking forward to playing the Rock and Roll Hotel next month. And this time we'll bring some polish to snap on those penny loafers.

Make It Plane video-ish

So somebody recently asked in my comments if I had any videos up, and it struck me that MySpace has videos, and that I should probably upload some.

I don't have a huge catalog of waiting videos, though I'm fairly certain I'll find our music video of Faith No More's "Epic" from middle school. Has become a perennial fav amongst the cognoscenti.

In the meantime, my good man Chadwell who is teh hipster shot a few one-take videos of me singing last winter. As they've been languishing only on local hard drives, I think it's only time they found their way to where everyone cares about anything: the Internets.

Lord knows we've shot a lot of footage since 1977. I hope it all makes it onto MySpace. Here's "Make It Plane" in St. Louis in January or so.

F Posterity is still sort of on vacation...

...but I never want to let everybody down, so I've dug out of the vaults an old recording that needs to see the light of day.

More specifically, I called my brother Dave and asked him to fax me the mp3, because I destroyed the original restoring my hard drives a few years ago. This was really tragic, because it was recorded on a warm night in May 2004, the very night it was written.

Tucker Booth and my brother Jonathan were in town from St. Louis for just the weekend, and I thought we had to record a song together while they were. So on the uptown 16th street bus, I sang myself a little chorus and verse, and showed them to the guys when they came over.

It was a country swing, and I wanted Jon and Tucker to record something out of their typical niche. Jon dug through some journals and found some lyrics he liked, and Tucker listened to our verses and freestyled his. I ended up cutting two of his freestyles together to make a coherent verse; the first one ended, "cuz you don't care and i don't care so / ugh ungh ack ackk throw it in the air." Yeah, there was some beer involved at the recording session.

In addition, a sketchy dude had come along on the trip to help them with the job (they were in town putting on a new roof), and after being unwarrantedly hostile with me during the session, he casually offered to lay a verse over the bridge. I humored him, and the mindless monotone he delivered streamed from Venn diagrams to Michael Jackson records prior to 1984. You know, typical country music banter.

That said, I wish it hadn't been erased, because it was a bizarre moment of Frozen Food madness. Apparently our man had been off antidepressants for a couple months. Later in their trip, he would inform an emcee at a party in Arlington that the emcee had a "leg up" in the rap business because he was "black". I still have to tell my friends I had just met the dude.

Note this session was also early in the learning of Pro Tools, and before any good mics were to be had by a novice. Regrettably, I never got a good mix or master before it was erased, but I did have the good fortune to send a copy to my brother in California.

We play "Tales of Woe" now as a pop rock number with the band, but it started as a stomp-my-heart country swing, written on an uptown bus.

Dig it, and next week I'll be back with some freshness.

16.75 Tales of Woe (Getzschman-Getzschman-Booth) - September 20.

I'll try and do a master of this mp3 in the future, so check back in a week and it may have a new gloss on it.

UPDATE: I did something like a re-master. Sounds a little clearer and louder now.

The best-selling iTunes burner from "Hypocrisy In The Genius Room"

A week or two ago I revealed, to no small astonishment of the masses, that the alternative classic "Break Out the Mashed Potato", an ode to diplomatic posturing and cultural marketing, was the worst-selling song off my album, Hypocrisy in the Genius Room.

Today I present you with the equally-unexpected best-selling song of the album. I can't explain this. I almost left this song off the set, because I didn't feel like it really fit the rest of the album. But oddly enough, it's sold the best, and even caught me off guard when it was requested live on the radio up in New Jersey.

"Corned. Beef. Hash."

To listen and download for free, click here:
http://mp3postcards.com/listen?1550

So in the mix of all the antifolkish concept album, this jazzy wtf song seems to strike a chord with some listeners. I've been told the title is a good hook. In a way, it's an empathetic song. "Listen, homes, I want you to know you're not the only one alone." And it features some tasteful drumming by Danny Fisher. As for the sweepstakes, in which I offered a free cd to the seventh caller who could guess the best-seller, um, nobody won. The popular guesses seemed to be "Power Corrupts" and "Pockets of Resistance", but nobody guessed "Corned Beef Hash." I know I didn't.

But anyway. If you missed the auralphonic goodness of "Break Out the Mashed Potato", click here:

And if you haven't heard the anthemic "Make It Plane", which name-checks Mao Tse-Tung and advocates bling, bling, bling until the crowds blow foam, click here:
http://mp3postcards.com/listen?1492

All these mp3 postcards will let you listen, download, and forward it to friends if you want to. All in all, this constitutes 3/14ths of the album for free. That's hard to beat, unless you download it all for free with file-sharing software, in which, case, it's easily beaten.

F Posterity is on vacation.

Good listeners, I'm headed out of town tomorrow and thus have many pressing issues to take care of.

I have, however, been working on a little something something for syncing to the film I shot last Spring. It's an old song, but I've produced a full version of it with bass, drums, guitar, harmony vocals and even a guitar solo. A tender, shredding guitar solo. It's clear I need a little practice at mixing and mastering at this point.

So in lieu of F Posterity this week, here's a rough mix of "Manual Labor Pains".

The score at Revolution Records (RIP?)

This weekend Revolution Records on Connecticut in DC shut down, which is quite a pity. I can't genuinely say I was a fan, as I went there for the first time Saturday. I'd driven by that stretch hundreds of times and never seen it, even after seeing promotions and knowing its general location. Even as an obsessive-compulsive vinylphile, that place was easy to miss, sandwiched between the genetically modified KFC/Pizza Hut hybrid and some generic chinese food joint. I still had trouble finding it on Saturday.

I talked some with the owner (Nayan of the DC band Gist), and there's some chance they'll open again at a bigger location with a performance space and coffee house or something, which would be great, since we've already lost Capital City Records down on U Street.

But more importantly, I dropped $120 on music while I was there (after the clearance discounts), scoring many a vinyl and compact disque, of which I'd like to share a few. The real bummer is, I've been waiting to pick up a real record player and can't savor the selections just yet.

Tiny Desk Unit - "Naples" - I swear it was last week I was reading Wikipedia's entry on DC's 9:30 Club, which notes that the first and last band to play at the 9:30 Club's original location was Tiny Desk Unit. That's a name no one would remember, I thought, expecting it to dissipate into trivia oblivion. Until Saturday, when I see this vinyl by Tiny Desk Unit for $40. With only four songs. They were on a local DC label called 9 1/2" x 16" Records, and I'm damn curious to hear what they sound like. Having a soft spot for local record labels, I had to pick it up.

The Beatles - "The Beatles Again" - Um, let's commend the marketing dynamo who dubbed this record "The Beatles Again". Such a challenging, provocative title for a collection of singles that kicks off with "Can't Buy Me Love", rolls through "Revolution" and concludes with "Ballad of John and Yoko". Oddly enough, the spine of the album notes the title as "Hey Jude". What a fantastic spread of artistic evolution on this disc - including "Rain", which is widely regarded as Ringo's best bit of drumming. Can't wait to hear it on the turntable.

The Beach Boys - "Endless Summer" - Again, another compilation disc, but I don't have any Beach Boys on vinyl. I'm really getting into picking over their harmonies with a fine-toothed comb, even the pop baubles of their early hits.

Donald Fagen - "The Nightfly" - $4. Half off. I know nothing about the title, but Donald Fagen is half of Steely Dan. Really, I'll gamble $2 on just about anything that's on vinyl, short of Joyce.

Steely Dan - "Katy Lied" - This album's got "Bad Sneakers" and "Doctor Wu", and it was $4, probably because it has Walter Becker on it too.

Bruce Springsteen - "Darkness on the Edge of Town" - again, $2 for an amazing vinyl title. Bruce recorded this dark, moody album after a couple years of legal battles with his former manager. This is to Bruce as "Mutations" is to Beck - deeper followups to huge commercial successes. In Bruce's case, it was "Born To Run", and while "Darkness on the Edge of Town" didn't have much success at the time, it's now listed in various all-time best-of lists. For whatever those are worth. Try wrapping your head around a song like "Candy's Room" with the perspective of today's music and songwriting.

Monty Python - "Monty Python's Previous Record" - 1972 Monty Python on vinyl is gold.

Plus....

I picked up Matisyahu's "Youth" EP and a 45 single of "King Without a Crown" - free, as well as a free Ben Folds 45, which includes his cover of Snoop Dogg's "Bitches Ain't Shit". And on CD, a long-sought-after Dead Milkmen album, two by At the Drive-In, and "Trans-Europe Express" by Kraftwerk, which will answer a lot of your questions about Beck's "Midnight Vultures".

Now this, I feel, is the heart and soul of the weblog: like anyone cares what records I scored this weekend. I just want to trumpet it to the world because I did.

F Posterity, issue 16: The Postal Service's "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight"

Okay freaks of the industry, this week marks the completion of four months of "F Posterity".

(For new readers, "F Posterity" is a weekly posting of new music in the form of completely raw, unpolished demos. Every five or so I record a cover of someone else's work. And in this way, I anticipate to heal the world, literally, through songwriting, one eardrum at a time. These recordings cure infectious diseases with their infectious hooks and will help you convalesce from any ailment or infirmity, from dyspepsia to the gout. Just lay a hand on your CPU, listen and believe.)

This week I've covered an absolute favorite as it shouts out my adopted metropolis and feels good to sing. I've covered this some with Analog Jetpack, and I've played out a completely acoustic version once, in St. Louis at the now-defunct Frederick's Music Lounge. Sometimes, when I wake up early, I can hit low notes I usually can't (recently I taped hitting a low C, two whole steps below the usual floor of low E), and so when I couldn't sleep early this morning, I got up and recorded a deep version of The Postal Service's "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight".

This plays like something of a lullaby now. The texture of the song, even in its IDM form, is an enveloping sound, one that wraps around you. Ben Gibbard has a gift for both melody and wit, and I must say I feel The Postal Service's "Give Up" will prove to be a timeless album. In thinking of the way I discovered Zeppelin, the Beatles, Dylan, and lesser-known artists from bygone generations, I was trying to imagine which records kids will put on 30 years from now, letting the sound wash over them and thinking, "Man it must've been cool to be alive when this stuff was new." I feel like kids will be doing that with "Give Up".
