F Posterity, issue 35: "Ask Somebody"

Here's another old song from around 2003 that needed some editing. As Regina Spektor sings, berating the songwriter in her,
You don't have no doctor Robert
You don't have no uncle Albert
You don't even have good credit
You can write but you can't edit
This is one I played with the band I rolled with in DC before Analog Jetpack. The song was a little long and smug but fun to play. It needed some editing, and I hadn't bothered until I had nothing to record today. And once I got recording, it couldn't be just acoustic. I'd have liked to throw some harmonies and whatnot over it all, some shouts and what have you, but the day's prospects for productivity are looking bleak as is. I did manage to get some roommates on the soul claps. And who needs more than some soul claps in your life?
Ask Somebody

If I could tell you, brother man you know that I would
Hi-fives, holla, it's all good
But it would fail you, mackin' on a cell phone
Mock-important, slop top 40 ringtone
Spank elastic stonewashed jeans
Crankin' radio with extra MSG
But there's a big-legged woman at the back of the draw
Fixin' up a quarter million tons of slaw and singin'
I'm fightin' with a typewriter ribbon
Bleedin' cut-rate ink on the sun
While everybody in the business bleeds these tales by the tons
To grow tired like the old ones
Congratulations! I heard the haps
Pimpin' ground effects on a fanny pack
Pacin' out the lotto to finally pay
Rocking white British Knights after labor day
Bumping that Alpine at the intersection
Sideways glance just to see who's checkin' you out
And all the heads shake eyes rolled backs turned
Voices low, tradin' third-degree burns and
I am fightin' with a typewriter ribbon
Bleedin' cut-rate ink on the sun
And this has just gone on too long
And here comes the gong

If you don't know, then you just had better ask somebody
'Cause there are lo, so many more long gone, long before you now
And if you don't know, then you had better ask somebody
Statistics show and the studies and the nine out of ten
Shake their heads about the other one
Hellified triumph hydrochloride
Stereotypes in a checkout line
Shake your head and you're just the same
And just maybe, baby, the cryin' shame is
If it ain't somebody who just don't know
It's probably some trendsetter who ought to know better
But depending on where you have found to stand
The sky is already touching the ground and
chorus...
