F Posterity, issue 37: "White Collar (Old Philly Dollar)"

Every once in awhile I have a dream in which music is playing, or I'm singing a song in the dream, and I wake up with the lyrics in my head. Over Christmas while I was in Paris, I woke up with the phrase, "I can pass an old Philly dollar into the lap of the authorities" and a melody in my head. I wrote it down, because if you don't, those things rarely return.

I didn't know quite what it meant, the old Philly dollar, but it sounded vaguely like slang for counterfeit. Moreover, the lyrics I'd written down that morning say, "And if I can pass a Pennsylvania greenback into the very hands of the Fed" ... with no conclusion. I can't remember if I woke with that as part of the dream or not, but I wondered all day what an old Philly dollar and a Pennsylvania greenback were.

Today I went to write a new song with the chorus, "I won't break for the county line when the verdict comes to serve my time / I'll just sing an old gospel rhyme and say goodbye," and the Pennsylvania greenback jumped back in my head. It's nice to have aimless lyrics sitting around, because they usually find a place eventually. This song fits a kind of melancholy, old-timey niche, like Bob Dylan's "Lay Down Your Weary Tune", "Farewell" or Tom Waits' "Old Shoes". This song also gave me the excuse to rip a line from "His Eye Is On The Sparrow", one of my favorite gospel tunes.

Regardless, "old Philly dollar" still means nothing. An "old Enron dollar" might be closer to meaningful, but less romantic.
White Collar (old Philly dollar)

chorus:
I won't break for the county line when the verdict comes to serve my time
I'll just sing an old gospel rhyme and say goodbye.

You know I can pass an old Philly dollar into the lap of the authorities
Swap that stash for cold, hard cash and walk away scott free
And if I can pass a Pennsylvania greenback into the very hands of the fed
This sort is just for sport, and I'll soon be dead
chorus
I like to see my work in the headlines, I like to see a rush of police
Stand too close just to boast, and walk away scott free
And I like to think that I'm just a locksmith with a knack for the perfect key
High hopes or stethascope, it's just the same to me
chorus
Well I never set foot in a prison, nor correctional facility
My success rate has killed my faith in all the powers that be
And something inside me is desperate to be caught with a crimson hand
Just so I can know I'm not supposed to win in the end
chorus
I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free
But something inside me knows I'm not supposed to be
chorus
